DHS Secondary Data Analysis on SRHR

As part of its comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness of German development cooperation in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), the German Institute for Development Evaluation (DEval) engaged rowsquared to contribute to an analysis of cross-national panel data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS).

First, we created a data set for 31 SRHR indicators for 33 countries which received non-negligible German funds for SRHR interventions between 2011 and 2023.

This exercise involved defining suitable SRHR indicators in DHS and beyond, harmonising data across time and countries, and identifying and merging adequate control variables from other sources.

Second, we conducted regression analyses for the resulting data set and documented different approaches in a process and results protocol.

We furthermore advised the SRHR team on how to deal with potential reverse causality in these analyses and how to treat missing values in the data set.

Our work enabled DEval to enrich its multi-method evaluation of German development cooperation with cross-national household survey analyses.
